The Faculty

The Institute of Neuroscience consists of faculty members from several academic departments at the University of Oregon.  They conduct grant-supported research and train graduate students and postdoctoral associates in five overlapping affinity groups. These informal groups focus on research issues of mutual interest at various biological levels and include cellular neuroscience, developmental biology, excitable systems, neural plasticity, and cognitive neuroscience.

Research Laboratories

The Institute of Neuroscience is centered in Huestis and Streisinger Halls, which house most of the research laboratories for neuroscience and developmental genetics research at the University of Oregon. These laboratories are part of the university's science complex, which includes the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer and Information Science, Geological Sciences, Physics, and interdisciplinary Institutes in Molecular Biology, Cognitive and Decision Science, and Materials Science and the Center for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.  The departments of Psychology and Human Physiology are located on campus nearby.

Training Programs

Graduate training at the Institute of Neuroscience emphasizes creative research leading to the Ph.D. degree.  We offer formal training programs in cellular and developmental biology and cell and systems neuroscience.  Students may also elect to tailor individualized programs of study, in consultation with the Advisory Committee.  The goal of the program is to expose graduate students during their predoctoral training to a range of ideas and techniques that will allow them to pursue successful research careers.  We encourage students to take advantage of the ample opportunities for interdisciplinary research at the University of Oregon.
